Vale: Lee Lau

It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of Lee Lau, who passed away at the age of 62. Lee was a much-loved member of the Victorian badminton community. His commitment to the sport was evident through his contributions as a Technical Official since 2023, in addition to supporting and developing players through coaching with the Infinity Badminton Club.

Building Inclusion Through Badminton: Play & Lead Program

Led by Michael Simpkins, a para-athlete who became Victoria’s first paid regional para-badminton coach, the sessions focus on growth, confidence, and belonging. Michael’s coaching approach has quickly won the hearts of participants as he encourages them through every challenge, never discouraging mistakes but turning them into opportunities to learn. As one participant recalled, his feedback often sounds like, “Don’t be disheartened, that was a good shot, you just need to do this instead.”

Feathered Friends Takes Flight in Ballarat!

The event began with an arts and crafts activity where participants expressed their creativity by painting and spray painting on a white shirt. The atmosphere was bright and cheerful, with everyone chatting, laughing, and sharing ideas as they designed their colourful creations. Afterward, participants headed to the badminton courts for some friendly games, where the fun continued.

Bendigo Eaglehawk Badminton Club hosts international tournaments

Badminton Victoria extends its congratulations to the Bendigo Eaglehawk Badminton Club for successfully hosting a triple-header of international tournaments this month — the VICTOR Oceania Para Badminton Championships, YONEX Bendigo International, and the YONEX Australian Para Badminton International.

Shuttle Smash Brings New Energy to Wonthaggi Badminton Club

The program has already had a meaningful impact on both the Wonthaggi Badminton Club and the wider community. Families with kids now have a fresh and accessible sporting option that encourages healthy habits and social connection. For the club, it has created stronger community ties by introducing badminton to a new generation and laid the groundwork for future growth.

Umpiring Course in Bendigo

As part of ongoing revitalisation programs funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, Bendigo Eaglehawk Badminton Association hosted a successful badminton umpiring course on 23rd August 2025. The program included a face-to-face training session, offering participants the opportunity to build their officiating skills and work towards official umpiring accreditation.

Shuttle Smash at Kyabram Youth Club!

Shuttle Smash is coming back to Kyabram Youth Club in Term 4! Running from October 7 to November 25, the program is designed to introduce the kids to badminton in an accessible, supportive and exciting environment at just $85 for the term. No prior experience is needed and all equipment is provided—kids just need to come along and enjoy!

BV is currently developing the Strategic Plan for 2026-28, and we want to make sure it reflects what matters to our community. Over the next few weeks, clubs/associations and partners will receive survey link from BV. The survey will be open until Sunday, 31 August 2025. We strongly encourage each club/association to submit at least one response that reflects the group’s shared priorities.

Vale: Gary Grierson

Badminton Victoria mourns the passing of Gary Grierson, A dedicated technical official and administrator of the BV Court Officials Committee and Central Badminton Association (CBA). Gary's contributions to the sport earns himself a Distinguished Service Award from Badminton Victoria in 2013, and have since left an enduring legacy on the Badminton Community in Victoria and Australia.
