At Badminton Geelong, the Play & Lead Program has become more than just a badminton initiative, it’s a community where encouragement, friendship, and inclusion thrive. Supported and funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, this program provides participants with disabilities the chance to develop their skills, stay active, and build meaningful social connections.
Led by Michael Simpkins, a para-athlete who became Victoria’s first paid regional para-badminton coach, the sessions focus on growth, confidence, and belonging. Michael’s coaching approach has quickly won the hearts of participants as he encourages them through every challenge, never discouraging mistakes but turning them into opportunities to learn. As one participant recalled, his feedback often sounds like, “Don’t be disheartened, that was a good shot, you just need to do this instead.”
This genuine and supportive coaching style helps players build both skill and confidence. Michael knows when to celebrate good shots and when to gently guide his players toward improvement, always ensuring that everyone feels capable and motivated.

The participants say the program has done wonders for their physical and mental well-being. It keeps them moving, helps them stay fit, and creates strong bonds of friendship. “We’ve made so many new friends here,” one participant shared. “It’s great to be part of something that makes you feel included.”
Family support has also been a key part of the program’s success. Many parents stay to watch their children play, cheering proudly from the sidelines. One parent even joined the session to help when there were fewer participants, showing the strong sense of community that has grown around the program.
As the program continues to grow, we hope to see even more participants join in the future and more people discovering the joy of badminton, the value of inclusion, and the power of community.
With the continued support, the program aims to keep expanding and inspiring more athletes across regional Victoria to get involved in para-badminton. A heartfelt thank you goes to Michael Simpkins for his dedication, patience, and leadership, and to Badminton Geelong for fostering such an inclusive and supportive environment for all.
