Shuttle Smash Brings New Energy to Wonthaggi Badminton Club

Published Thu 18 Sep 2025

Since the challenges of COVID, the Wonthaggi Badminton Club has been steadily rebuilding and over the past two years has found fresh momentum. Shuttle Smash is a key part of its vision to grow the sport in the region.

The Shuttle Smash program made waves in Wonthaggi throughout July and August 2025, and the community response was overwhelmingly positive. The program is a badminton initiative designed for children aged 5 to 12 that can be delivered by anyone, anywhere, anytime, using fun and inclusive activities to develop fundamental skills and physical literacy.

While initial attendance was modest, participation steadily grew, with the program eventually accommodating 15 children. This increase reflected strong community support, largely driven by an influx of new families with young children, and highlighted the promising potential for the development of the juniors.

Reflecting on the program, Wonthaggi Badminton Club representative Kim Wong said, “Parents have expressed how much they value this opportunity, particularly as equipment was provided, which allowed many children to take part who otherwise may not have been able to. For the kids, the sessions were both fun and rewarding, with steady improvements each week building their confidence and keeping them eager to return.”

The program has already had a meaningful impact on both the Wonthaggi Badminton Club and the wider community. Families with kids now have a fresh and accessible sporting option that encourages healthy habits and social connection. For the club, it has created stronger community ties by introducing badminton to a new generation and laid the groundwork for future growth.

Kim also shared, “The most rewarding part has been bringing badminton back to the Bass Coast after so many years. Seeing the children’s smiles, their excitement each week, and their personal progress made it all worthwhile.”

The club continues to welcome people of all ages and skill levels to join. With Shuttle Smash leading the way, the future of badminton in the Bass Coast is full of promise. Following the success of this program, Wonthaggi will extend their junior programs until October 2025 to ensure the children can continue playing and developing their skills.

A special thank you goes to Adrian Falvey, Kim Wong, and the Wonthaggi Badminton Club who have been outstanding in their efforts to promote the program and the sport. Their commitment and hard work have been vital to the success of Shuttle Smash and to the growing excitement for badminton in the community.
