VALE: FRED STANLAKE

Published Tue 27 May 2025

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved friend and champion of badminton, Fred Stanlake.

Fred was a dedicated and much loved figure in the Victorian badminton community for over 40 years. Beginning his umpiring career in the early 1970s, he went on to serve as both an umpire and referee at local, national, and international levels. Fred is fondly remembered by past players for his kindness and care while sharing a joke in between matches as part of the Vic team at National Carnivals and local tournaments.

His leadership and passion extended well beyond the court. Fred served on the Badminton Victoria(BV) Board, was a valued member of the Junior Committee, and held the position of Secretary for the BV Court Officials Committee (BVCOC) for 10 years. He also served as Secretary of the Latrobe Valley Badminton Association for 13 years. In recognition of his long-standing commitment for over 25 years, Fred was awarded a Distinguished Service Award.

Fred’s many contributions to the sport included line judging at the 1982 Brisbane Commonwealth Games and the 2000 Sydney Olympics, umpiring at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games, the Thomas & Uber Cup, the Whyte Trophy, refereeing at the 2002 World Masters Games in Melbourne and the 2005 Deaflympics in Melbourne.

Fred’s unwavering dedication, humility, and service to the badminton community will never be forgotten. His legacy lives on in the players, officials, and friends he inspired over the decades.

Thank you, Fred, for everything. May you rest in peace.
