It is with profound sadness that we share the news of the passing of David Hoppen.

David was not merely a participant in the sport; he was a foundational pillar whose contributions as a player, umpire, referee, team manager, administrator, and educator spanned decades and left an indelible mark on Australian badminton. His dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment shaped the sport in countless ways.

David’s journey in the sport began on court, where he distinguished himself at both state and national levels. He secured multiple Victorian Open titles and Australian Championship victories, proudly representing Victoria at National Championships and Australia in prestigious international competitions, including the Thomas Cup.

Following his playing career, David transitioned seamlessly into officiating as an umpire and referee. He was acknowledged on the international stage when he was appointed chief referee for the Thomas and Uber Cup in 2000, which was one of the many international tournaments he refereed..

Beyond the court, David served as a Board Director of Badminton Victoria, including a six-year tenure as President from 1989 to 1995. He also contributed at the national level as a Board Director of Badminton Australia. His work in strategic planning, governance, and policy development strengthened the foundations of the sport nationwide.

David Hoppen's legacy is one of unparalleled dedication and comprehensive involvement. From national champion and Thomas Cup captain to international chief referee and team manager, he embodied every facet of a true servant of the sport.
