Shuttle Stories: Growing the Game in Geelong

Published Fri 09 May 2025

Badminton Geelong has a proud history of supporting athletes and developing badminton in the region since. In recent years, the club has undergone significant transformation, including the launch of the Geelong Badminton Academy. These developments have revitalised the club and attracted participants of all ages and skill levels, further strengthening the local badminton community.

Badminton Victoria is pleased to engage in an in-depth conversation with Naman Bhardwaj and John Van Klaveren from this distinguished and dynamic club, to share their valuable contributions to badminton in Victoria, explore what sets them apart, and learn more about their future vision.

Innovation & Challenge

Badminton Geelong was established in 1946 with the mission to promote and develop badminton across the greater Geelong region. For many decades, the club operated successfully with quality facilities and a strong base of players and teams.

However, as Badminton Geelong’s marketing team leader, John Van Klaveren shared:

“Around 2010, after more than 60 years of history, the club began facing challenges—most notably, a decline in junior player participation.

In response, Badminton Geelong undertook a significant transition toward a more formalised and modernised club structure, resulting in remarkable growth.

As a regional club, Badminton Geelong faced specific challenges—not only a smaller population than metropolitan Melbourne, but also the need to shift community attitudes. The Geelong community has its own lifestyle and social rhythms, where change is often met with hesitation. Historically, Badminton Geelong maintained a modest membership. As with many long-standing organisations, change took time. Introducing new ideas and transforming the club’s direction required thoughtful engagement and communication. Over time, long-time members began to see the value of innovation and became active supporters of the club’s exciting evolution and future vision. Through consistent efforts, the club was ultimately able to foster a more open-minded and forward-thinking environment among its members.

Geelong Badminton Academy

In order to realise the innovation, Badminton Geelong appointed Naman Bhardwaj, a highly experienced badminton professional, as the club’s Sports Development and Facilities Coordinator. Naman established the Geelong Badminton Academy, supported by a team of six qualified coaches who now deliver structured and professional training to junior players.

This initiative has significantly strengthened the junior development program. Since its launch, the number of junior players has grown to nearly 70 within 2 years. While weekly coaching and school programs existed before, the Academy introduced a more formalised and professional pathway for junior players.

A comprehensive grading system allows players to progress from beginner level to competitive athletes, with targeted coaching at each stage. Notably, five junior athletes from the Academy were selected to compete at the national level last year, which is a testament to the Academy’s success.

Badminton Geelong also hosts regular weekly competitions, including mixed events that bring juniors and seniors together. These not only support skill-building but also strengthen community ties and inspire young players.

Looking ahead

Badminton Geelong serves as both a welcoming venue and a training ground for professional players in the region. The club provides opportunities for individuals of all ages and backgrounds, whether young children or older adults, men or women, casual enthusiasts or aspiring professionals can all enjoy and grow through badminton.

Currently, Badminton Geelong is collaborating with more than 20 local schools to introduce students to badminton, encouraging participation from a young age and fostering a deeper connection to the sport.

Looking ahead, the club is committed to further enhancing its facilities by expanding the number of courts to offer members a more comfortable playing experience. Additionally, Badminton Geelong plans to strengthen its partnerships with local primary schools, promoting badminton for developing both physical fitness and an interest in sport among younger generations.

Guided by “Badminton for All,” Badminton Geelong warmly welcomes individuals from all walks of life. Whether you are seeking a friendly social environment or aiming for high-performance training, the club offers a wide range of programs and opportunities tailored to meet your needs.
