The Shuttle Smash All Abilities and Community Badminton program is making a meaningful impact in Benalla, creating a welcoming and inclusive space for participants of all ages and abilities. Delivered at the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre the program continues to provide opportunities for community members to stay active, connect socially, and build confidence through badminton.
Led by para-athlete and coach Michael Simpkins, each session is designed to be accessible, supportive, and engaging. Michael’s encouraging coaching style ensures that every participant feels valued and capable, regardless of their experience or ability level.

The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants and families. One parent shared,
“This program gives our family something we don’t usually have access to — a safe and welcoming place to play sport together.”
Another participant reflected,
“The program is fun and everyone is so supportive.”
For many families who may not have regular access to social sport or physical activity opportunities, Shuttle Smash has become an important outlet for connection, movement, and community engagement.
The event is ongoing, with the next session scheduled for 7 March 2026, from 11:00am to 12:00pm at the Benalla Indoor Recreation Centre. Community members are encouraged to come along, try badminton in a relaxed setting, and experience the positive atmosphere firsthand.
We would like to thank Darrel Defazio, representative of the Benalla Badminton Association, for his dedication in running this program. His ongoing support and commitment have helped create a welcoming and inclusive environment for the Benalla community.
