Young players across Ellinbank, Drouin and Labertouche have been introduced to badminton through Shuttle Smash, a six-week grassroots program designed to build skills, confidence and a love for the sport in a fun and inclusive environment. Delivered through weekly Friday sessions, the program created accessible opportunities for children to stay active and connect with badminton in a welcoming community setting.

As part of the Regional Badminton Revitalisation Program, the final two sessions were delivered in Warragul following the Shuttle Smash program, in response to a recognised need to further engage junior participants in the region. While earlier sessions were supported by local club coaches, these final sessions were designed to attract a broader audience by bringing in specialised coaching and creating a more structured, family-friendly environment.
Participants benefited from coaching led by David Tay, Head Coach of Impact 24 in Melbourne and a BWF Level 1 accredited coach, alongside assistant coaches Yvonne and Xavier. Their involvement provided high-quality guidance and support, contributing to noticeable improvements in player skills. One participant shared increased confidence in their drop shots and serving techniques.
The program has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from both participants and parents, with many juniors returning week after week, demonstrating strong engagement and enjoyment. One participant shared that they would happily join again if the program returns, reflecting the lasting interest built through the initiative.
Parents have also recognised the program’s impact. One parent noted that while they never had the opportunity to play badminton themselves, their child has developed a strong interest through the program and has since begun exploring competitive pathways.

At the final session, participants shared that they had made many new friends through the program, highlighting the strong social connections built over the past eight weeks. The session also featured a community-style celebration, with a BBQ, ice cream, milkshakes, and donuts provided by the club, creating a fun and welcoming atmosphere for everyone involved.
Badminton Victoria extends its thanks to Sandra (President), Louise Young (Secretary), and Paul (Treasurer) from the Mid Gippsland Junior Badminton Association for their dedication in delivering these programs and supporting the growth of badminton in the region.
