Ballarat All Abilities Program

Published Fri 13 Mar 2026

Supported by Badminton Victoria and funded by Sport and Recreation Victoria, the All Abilities Badminton Program in Ballarat is an initiative designed to provide ongoing participation opportunities for people with disabilities. The program focuses on creating a welcoming and accessible environment where participants can stay active, build confidence, and enjoy social connection through sport.

Delivered in partnership with Ballarat Badminton Association, the program offers weekly adaptive sessions tailored to a range of needs, including wheelchair players, standing players, and individuals who require modified equipment such as lighter racquets or alternative shuttlecocks. As the equipment and venue access are provided free to participants, the program helps remove financial barriers and supports greater community participation.

Participants have shared very positive feedback about the program and the supportive atmosphere it creates. Evan Milne reflected on his experience, saying, “I’m really enjoying the program and it’s fantastic having Michael as our coach. At first I didn’t know how to use a wheelchair at all, but now I’m eager to keep learning and hope to compete at a higher level in the future. I also enjoy the social side of the sessions.”

Caitlin Brown also highlighted how welcoming the program has been, sharing, “The program is very accessible for people with disabilities because everyone is supported to learn in their own way. It’s also a great opportunity to meet other players and make new friends.”

For Anthony Kynoch, who joined the program for the first time, the experience has been very positive. He shared,“I would definitely recommend others to come and give it a try.”

Meanwhile, Noah Barwick expressed his enthusiasm to continue participating, adding, “I’m looking forward to coming back for more sessions.”

With ongoing support from the community and partners, the program will continue to build meaningful participation opportunities and strengthen inclusive sport in Ballarat. We sincerely thank Jordan Hegarty as the programs coordinator for her commitment and support in delivering the program, as well as the Ballarat Badminton Association for creating a welcoming space where everyone can feel valued and included.
