Congratulations to our Victoria Smashers Senior State Team on winning the Ede Clendinnen Shield National Team Event for the seventh time in a row!
The Victoria Smashers sailed through the competition relatively unscathed from the preliminary round robins to the Semi-Finals and Finals, defeating South Australia in the Final 11-2.
On the adjacent court, Seed 2 New South Wales Thunder fought hard to retain a Medal Placing against Queensland, but were levelled with their opposition at 6-6 leading up to the final match of the tie, the First Ranked Mixed Doubles. In the end, Queensland's absence from a Medal position after many years was enough motivation to pull through and secure the win in straight games, and take the Bronze Medal.
Our second State Team, the Victoria Strikers had plenty of heart-stopping action, with three-game matches in most rounds against other state and territory teams. Keeping in touch with a fighting spirit throughout the tournament, the Victoria Strikers finished in 5th Place ahead of The Territories (6th) and Tasmania (7th).
Badminton Victoria congratulates all the competing teams on the great team spirit that makes the event enjoyable and competitive for all players involved. We also extend our congratulations to Claudia Lam (NSW) who was awarded the Cliff Cutt Memorial Trophy for displaying outstanding qualities of sportsmanship, personality, court demeanour, playing ability and appearance throughtout the Ede Clendinnen Shield and Australian National Championships.
We hope to see all the teams back again at the 2019 Ede Clendinnen Shield to be held in Tasmania!
