The 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open is well on its way, with our top Victorian players competing against the best competitors in the world at the BWF World Superseries. Here are the results of all the action in Sydney so far:
Matthew CHAU and Sawan SERASINGHE (VIC) - Men's Doubles
Matthew and Sawan were overcome by the number 8 seeds, CHEN Hung Ling and WANG Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei in Round 1 of the Men's Doubles Main Draw (21-7, 21-15).
Gronya SOMERVILLE with Setyana MAPASA (NSW) - Women's Doubles
The top Australian Women's double pair, Gronya and Setyana had a close match against POON Lok Yan and TSE Ying Suet from Hong Kong in Round 1 of the Main Draw in Women's Doubles. Unfortunately, the Aussies were defeated 21-19, 21-19.
Sawan SERASINGHE with Setyana MAPASA (NSW) - Mixed Doubles
The pair will competed against the Japanese combination Kenta KAZUNO and Ayane Kurihara in round 1 of the Mixed Doubles Main Draw. After warming up in the first game, Sawan and Setyana gave the Japanese pair a run for their money with setting in the second game. Unfortunately, the Aussies were unable to seal the deal, and were defeated 21-15, 24-22.
Louisa MA - Women's Singles
Louisa fought hard to win her qualifying matches against Indonesian Sekartaji Putri (21-17, 18-21, 21-12) and Aussie Junior Lauren Lim (21-9, 21-9) and secured a spot in the Main Draw. She then faced one of her sporting idols, Ratchanok INTHANON (THA) in Round 1, and was defeated 21-11, 21-12. Jacob SCHUELER and Nathan TANG - Men's Doubles
After walking over Korean pair Solgyu CHOI and Dukyoung KIM in the Men's Doubles qualification, Jacob and Nathan fell short to fellow Australians, Cham CHEN and Huaidong TANG in the Main Draw (21-19, 21-14).
Eric VUONG with Raymond TAM (NSW) - Men's Doubles
Eric and Raymond scored walkovers in their Qualification matches and landed themselves in Round 1 of the Main Draw. They were unfortunately defeated by Indonesians, Saputra ALVINDO and Ferdinand Sinarta SURBAKTI in a close rubber match - 21-17, 20-22, 21-13.
Matthew CHAU and Louisa MA - Mixed Doubles
Promoted from Qualifications, Matthew and Louisa competed against Chun Man TANG and Ying Suet TSE (HKG) in Round 1 of the Main Draw. They were unfortunately defeated 21-18, 21-15.
Hugo LEUNG and Verena CHIM - Mixed Doubles
Due to promotions of initial opponents, Hugo and Verena secured a spot in Round 1 of the Main Draw. They were unfortunately defeated 21-17, 21-14 against Japanese opponents Yugo KOBAYASHI and Misaki MATSUTOMO.
Jacob SCHUELER with Celeste LEE (NSW) - Mixed Doubles
After their Round 1 opponents withdrawing, Jacob and Celeste defeated fellow Australians Subhash AROLIVEETTIL and Michelle TAM in Round 2 (21-19, 21-13). They were then overcome in a close match against Indonesians Hendra TANDJAYA and Sekartaji PUTRI (21-17, 21-18) in the Main Draw.
Lauren LIM - Women's Singles Qualification
After promotions in the draws, Lauren defeated fellow Australian junior, Chloe LEE in Round 1 of the Women's Singles Qualification (21-13, 21-16). Unfortunately she was defeated by senior Victorian player, Louisa Ma (21-9, 21-9) in Round 2.
Ruwindi SERASINGHE - Women's Singles Qualification
Ruwindi was forwarded to Round 2 of the Women's Singles Qualification but was defeated by India's Ruthvika Shivani GADDE (21-9, 21-7).
Congratulations to our Victorian players on their hard work to compete in the BWF World Superseries.
