Victorian Players Prepare for the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open


With only weeks to go until the first match of the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open kicks off, our top Victorian players are training hard to prepare for the BWF Superseries. If you are heading to Sydney for the event during June 20 - 25, be sure to support our fellow Victorian players who will be in action from Day 1!

Matthew CHAU and Sawan SERASINGHE (VIC) - Men's Doubles


Currently ranked number 40 in the world, Matthew and Sawan will be competing at the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open Men's Doubles discipline. The long-time pair represented Australia at the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup recently as well as the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Matthew and Sawan will face the number 8 seeds, CHEN Hung Ling and WANG Chi-Lin from Chinese Taipei in Round 1 of the Men's Doubles Main Draw.

Gronya SOMERVILLE with Setyana MAPASA (NSW) - Women's Doubles


Coming off the back of a Quarter-Final result at the SCG Thailand Open 2017 and went undefeated recently at the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup, the pair have achieved their highest ranking to date with number 21 in Women's Doubles. Gronya and Setyana will also compete at the 2017 BCA Indonesia Open before competing at the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open. The ladies will go up against POON Lok Yan and TSE Ying Suet from Hong Kong in round 1 of the Main Draw in Women's Doubles.

Sawan SERASINGHE with Setyana MAPASA (NSW) - Mixed Doubles


Another pair that featured in the Australian team at the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup, Sawan and Setyana are currently ranked number 41 in the world - a strong position considering that they only began their partnership in international competition 1 year ago! The pair will compete against the Japanese combination Kenta KAZUNO and Ayane Kurihara in round 1 of the Mixed Doubles Main Draw.

There are also a number of Victorians who will need to fight through the Qualification rounds of the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open. Be sure to support these up and coming players as well!

Louisa MA - Women's Singles Qualification

A winner of last year's Badminton Victoria YONEX Elite Series and currently ranked Number 3 in Australia, Louisa is lined up against Indonesian Sekartaji Putri in Round 1 of Women's Singles Qualification.

Lauren LIM - Women's Singles Qualification

Ranked number 9 for Women's Singles in Australia, the young gun is set for her first entry into the Australian Badminton Open. Lauren will play against Sayaka Takahashi from Japan - the 3rd seed in the Women's Singles Qualification.

Ruwindi SERASINGHE - Women's Singles Qualification

The talented sibling of Sawan SERASINGHE, Ruwindi will compete for a place in the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Badminton Open main draw by playing against the 1st seed in the Women's Singles Qualification, Kirsty GILMOUR (SCO).

Jacob SCHUELER and Nathan TANG - Men's Doubles Qualification

The pair will partner up in Men's Doubles for the first time in international competition at this year's Australian Badminton Open. Jacob and Nathan will face Solgyu CHOI and Dukyoung KIM - 1st seeds of Men's Doubles qualification and members of the champion Korean Team at the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup.

Eric VUONG with Raymond TAM (NSW) - Men's Doubles Qualification

For the first time since their selection for the Australian team at the 2017 TOTAL BWF Sudirman Cup, Eric and Raymond will partner up in international competition at the 2017 CROWN GROUP Australian Open. The pair will play against William Hardjono and Fahmi Mubarok (INA) in round 1 of the Men's Doubles Qualification.

Matthew CHAU and Louisa MA - Mixed Doubles Qualification

Matthew and Louisa joined forces in Mixed Doubles since the start of this year after a 5-year break from international competition. Seeded number 2, they will fast-track to play the winner of Michael Fariman and Sylvinia Kurniawan (NSW) versus William Hardjono (INA) and Chloe Lee (NSW) in Round 2 of the Mixed Doubles Qualification.

Hugo LEUNG and Verena CHIM - Mixed Doubles Qualification

Currently studying in Melbourne, Hugo will compete in international competition for the first time with partner Verena Chim. They will face off Indonesian pair Hendra Tandjaya and Sekartaji Putri in Round 1 of the Mixed Doubles Qualification.

Jacob SCHUELER with Celeste LEE (NSW) - Mixed Doubles Qualification

A representative of the Australian team at last year's BWF World Junior Mixed Team Championships, Jacob is making his transition into Open level tournaments this year. Jacob will partner with NSW local, Celeste to play against Saputra Alvindo and Rofahadah Supriadi Putri from Indonesia in Round 1 of the Mixed Doubles Qualification.
